Finally paid a visit to this Red Star Restaurant 红星酒家 after so much tribute Pokka had given to them..
Old Hong Kong ambiance with dim sum auntie pushing dim sum cart around
There is no menu in this place. You have to stay alert 醒目and wink at the dim sum auntie when you see one nearby.. haha *Joke* ... The aunties will push the cart around, asking table by table if they want any of the variety on their cart... Nice service, friendly auntie, good sales person, so good that we over ordered!
Chinese style Kimchi, we call it "Ah Zha"
I gotta point this out.. this "duno what issit called" thing is literally an oil sponge.. i taste nothing but oil upon my bite! Eeek *the oil was not hot enough when they fry this thing* Dont order!
They made their mango pudding the way i like.. It's the taste i remembered, the one my mum used to bring me when i was a kid, a restaurant somewhere behind Yishun bus interchange, a memory of my childhood...
Didn't get to try their signature Egg tart, maybe next time.
Not all their dim sum are delish, but their ambiance wins it all. Nice to have a place that didn't catch up with time, take a trip down memory lane may you have time. Be prepared to get at least 30 to 40 min in queue..
